Saturday August 11 was Japan Day at US Cellular Field
in Chicago as the Chicago White Sox hosted the Seattle
Mariners, with American League leading hitter Ichiro
Suzuki. The Chicago Branch of Shorinji Kempo was
invited to give a demonstration at the game and Ann
Arbor Branch members went to Chicago to help out.
We arrived in Chicago around noon and met Chicago Branch Master Michael Eastwood, and members Akari and David for lunch.
After lunch and a rehearsal at the Chicago dojo, we went in the late afternoon to US Cellular Field for our demonstration and the game. A stage had been set up in in one of the main gate areas to enter the ball park and we were allotted two hours for the demonstration as people lined up to enter the ball park. Unfortunately, the stage surface had been exposed to the direct sun for several hours and was actually too hot to practice on barefoot. After several attempts to cool the stage, we concluded that the only way to practice safely was to wear shoes, which required some adjustment in our demonstration.
